Fall protection anchorage requirements
As a user of fall arrestor systems, it is essential to understand the core strength requirements of fall protection
anchorage connectors, a crucial aspect of workplace safety. Anchor points must be sufficiently robust to withstand
the immense impact forces generated during fall braking.
For Fall Arrest: 5,000 pounds (22.2 kN) per attached employee.
This is the absolute minimum strength for a single anchor point used for personal fall arrest systems (PFAS).
OSHA requires fall protection anchorage connectors to be capable of supporting at least twice the maximum
anticipated force, and industry consensus (ANSI) sets that maximum force at 1,800 lbs. Hence, the 5,000-lb
requirement provides a significant safety factor (nearly 3:1).
Critical: This is the force the anchor must withstand in any direction a worker might fall.
For Positioning (Work-Restraint): 3,000 pounds (13.3 kN).
Used when the system is designed to prevent a worker from reaching a fall hazard (e.g., a rebar chain or
positioning lanyard).
For Ladder Safety Systems & Horizontal Lifelines: 3,000 pounds (13.3 kN).
Specific requirements apply to the design of horizontal lifelines, which often require a professional engineer's
certification.
