What is d-ring safety factor?
The safety factor of a D-ring is the ratio between its minimum breaking strength and the maximum force it is ever
expected to withstand during a certified fall arrest event.
Industry Standard for Harness D Ring Safety?
For fall arrest applications, the standard safety factor for D-rings is 10:1 or higher.
This is mandated by the most important international safety standards:
EN 362:2004 (Personal protective equipment against falls from a height - Connectors)
Requires a minimum breaking strength of 25 kN.
This is tested against a 15 kN static load for 3 minutes.
Calculated Factor: 25 kN / 15 kN ≈ 1.67:1 (for the static test).
ANSI/ASSE Z359.12-2019 (Connecting Components for Personal Fall Arrest Systems)
Requires a minimum breaking strength of 22 kN (5,000 lbf).
This ensures it can withstand the maximum arrest force of a fall, which is limited to ≤ 6 kN (1,350 lbf) by an energy absorber.
Calculated Factor: 22 kN / 6 kN ≈ 3.7:1 (for the dynamic event).
